Martyn holds the Diploma of the Market Research Society, and reached Full Member status in 1991. He was made a Fellow of the MRS in 2001, for services to the Society.

He sat on the Training and Education committee in the early 90s, was elected to the Council of MRS for two terms between 1994 and 2000, sat as Vice-Chair in his final two years, and chaired four MRS Annual Conferences between 1997 and 2000.

He also sat on several committees to do with training and education in the research industry and tutored on the MRS Summer School for eight years during the 1990s. He is currently, with Dr David Smith, co-examiner for the MRS Accredited Masters Award.
